Kanditheemu

Kanditheemu — where Maldivian history runs deep

DISCOVER

Kanditheemu

Kanditheemu, in Shaviyani Atoll, is where the oldest known Thaana script was discovered. That heritage is still alive today: the community is deeply committed to preserving its cultural identity and the island's mangroves, beaches, tropical forest and marine environment. Surfers come for one of only two beach break surf points in the Maldives. The break is safer for intermediate surfers and uncrowded, with waves year-round and peak conditions from May to October. Conservation here isn't marketing talk. It is a genuine community effort that covers the mangroves, the forest, the beaches and the reefs around the island. Below the surface, a professional dive center offers certified PADI and SSI instruction in unexploited waters, with pristine coral, reef sharks, mantas and turtles. Fishing ranges from traditional reef fishing to big game — marlin, sailfish and tuna — with experienced local operators. Catch-and-cook experiences are also available.
